This one-day face-to-face symposium is designed for surgeons, nephrologists, trainees and specialist nurses interested in developing decision-making skills in deceased donor kidney utilisation. Decisions on whether to accept or decline a deceased donor kidney transplant offer, and who best to implant an organ into, are challenging and complex. This course aims to provide a framework and evidence-based on how to approach these decisions.

Educational Aims: 

• to better understand the context of UK deceased donor kidney transplantation in terms of patient outcomes on the national waiting list, and post-transplant  
• to better understand the current and expected national deceased donor kidney offering schemes in the UK and pathways through which kidneys can be implanted  
• to appreciate the existing UK evidence-base for the use of increased risk deceased donor kidneys, and the infrastructure to support decision-making  
• to develop a collaborative framework for approaching complex organ utilisation decisions in deceased donor kidney transplantation 

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of outcomes for patients on the national waiting list and post-transplant, knowledge of deceased donor kidney offering schemes in the UK, understanding of the evidence-base that guides organ acceptance and decline, and skills in decision-making around deceased donor kidney offers.
